This is an (only slightly) edited version of Detective Cat & Electric Dog, a story written by one of the students in my 7th grade ESL class in Doha, Qatar. The author is a Sri Lankan boy. This wasn't an assignment; it was just something he did and shared with his teachers.
Detective Cat and The Electric DogAt Apt. 12 on the second floor was Looney Cat, and the animals in the apartment building are his friends. Little did the animals in the building know that Looney Cat wa a very successful detective all his life. Unlike any other cats, Looney Cat was very kind, loving, grateful, caring and friendly, and you could count on him anytime. But in his apartment, he solved all his cases. He found the animal that stole Rover Dog's money. He found Goofy Wolf's missing credit card. And he helped Snobby Rat win in court adn sent Rampoticous Dog to jail for 14 years.
Join him in his wonderful detective work while reading the book and it will be fun and exciting! We start here at 12/4/2009 [I'll have to ask him if this is 12 April, which happens to be my birthday].
What a surprise!
Detective Cat was resting in his room. Today was his birthday and he was very excited! His friends from all over the aprtment building were going to come. They were supposed to come at 6:00 but they did not, and Detective Cat was used to these things. When the friends came they were out of breath. Detective Cat curiously asked "What happened?" The friends said in a low chorus "Why aren't there any elevators in this apartment building?"
Corpuslingy Cat
This made Detective Cat howl with laughter. Then a heavy voice said "It is not funny!" This made Detective Cat stop, jerk his head around along with his friends, and the most incredible thing happened. A white blur was shot and it took Detective Cat awhile to shout "Corpuslingy, you are back!"
As a cat stood there, quite still, without wasting a moment Detective Cat ran and hugged the cat tight. He said, "I knew you would come back!" And he started crying with happiness.
Corpuslingy was Detective Cat's best friend in the FBI. They had never separated until one day, while investigating a crime scene, Corpuslingy Cat shrieked and disappeared. The condition he was in now was terrible. His FBI clothes were torn, he had sharp cuts on his hands and face. Detective Cat said with a shivering voice, "We must get you to the hospital now!" Detective Cat was very scared for his friend at the time, so he left his other friends to guard his house while he was gone.
"Corpus, nooooooo!"
"At last," Detective Cat said with relief when he got to the hospital. There were several nurses wainting for a patient. As soon as he opened the door of his car, Detective Cat ran up to the nurses and told them his friend's plight. As soon as he said "Here," the door of his car opened. Detective Cat jerked his head. Corpuslingy Cat came out, struggled to climb up, and fell with a thud. Detective Cat shouted, "Corpus, nooooooo!"
The surgeons
Detective Cat ran to the door of his car and several nurses rushed while one went to get a stretcher and help. Detective Cat then did something that didn't happen very often. He lifted Corpuslingy and took him into an operating room.
"Good gracious! There's a patient here!" said one surgeon.
Another surgeon said, "Heez got a problem wit hiz zdroath yeh B." "Yeah," said another surgeon with annoyance.
"I will look after him," said Detective Cat, "can you look after my friend here?"
One surgeon said, "Ziz is crasy, yu no how te de surgery?!"
Detective Cat shook his head and a surgeon said, "Vell, prepare yerself, cauz zome people feint ven zey zee blood."
"I am not scared," Detective Cat said coldly. Detective Cat took the patient that the surgeons were dealing with and gave his precious friend to the surgeons. Just before he started the surgery with his patient, Detective Cat heard a scream and fainted (He did not faint because he was scared, but because he cared for his friends; in other words, he loved them as a boy loves his mother).
NO NO
"Ouch, that hurts," said Detective Cat.
"I am very zorry," said a doctor in a white coat.
"What happened?" Detective Cat asked.
"Detective Cat, you fainted," said the doctor.
"How did you know my name?" asked Detective Cat.
"Zat ist nat zomething to zalk about now. You have visiturs, zo zet zup," said the doctor.
"Arggh," shouted Detective Cat as he struggled to get up. A nurse rushed through the door to bring him refreshments. Detective Cat took a zip [sic] and that is when, suddenly, the door burst open. Two cats appeared, each carrying AK-47s. Without warning, they started shooting at Detective Cat's bed as the nurse screamed.
Detective Cat was just in time to jump out of the bed and release a smoke bomb. Then the cats ran into the room as the black smoke cleared. They stared at the sight that met their eyes: Detective Cat was not there.
One quickly said, "A don no, but ve gotta fine 'im." At the time that they were searching for Detective Cat, he was running to his car. He had managed to get through the window. He started his car, gunned the engine and took off. He was driving for half an hour, hard, not noticing what he was doing when the shock came to him: he had left his best friend at the hospital.
So to save his friend (because Detective Cat thought, "They must have kidnapped him"), he sharply turned a corner, ran onto the wrong side of the road, and BANG! he heard the horn beep and then lost consciousness.
Pipeline 1432
When Detective Cat awoke, he found himself in a hospital. He recognized the marking on the door: 4th Fl., 0-34; CAN, SAS, NORBATFRD, HOSPITAL MEDEVAC.
In other words, this meant he was in Canada. Near to him lay a newspaper. He quickly grabbed it. "The Daily Burge" was printed beautifully. Then he stared in horror at an article in the paper, which read Electric Dog escapes from jail.
Electric Dog was, and still is, an enemy of Corpuslingy Cat. Detective Cat looked up and saw a pipe large enough for a cat to fit in; the words PIPELINE 1432 printed in large, bold letters. Detective Cat kicked the pipe with his foot and it easily broke into smithereens. He looked up and started climbing into the pipe. When he jumped out, Detective Cat hurt his foot. Then he was looking up at an ambulance. He got up and started to head for the ambulance.
Hot-wired
"Oh, come on, come on, come on!" yelled Detective Cat.
Then he said, "Calm down." He quickly closed his eyes and opened them after a few seconds. His eyes widened and he said, "I suppose I have to hot-wire this thing."
After a few minutes of hard work, Detective Cat got the ambulance started. He gunned the engine, broke through a brick wall, and was at the reception. Detective Cat was tearing through hundreds of creatures, who ran and jumped for cover. The ambulance broke through another brick wall, crashing into many vehicles in the parking lot.
Detective Cat was going back to the American Border Hospital to save his friend. Soon, he thought while he drove: Since he had moved away from his family, he had spent most of his time wiht Corpuslingy Cat. Two days later, he got a job at Lydell University, but sadly his mother was killed by Ele...
Just when he thought of that, he jumped while holding the steering wheel, only his right hand let go when he hit the ceiling. He saw stars then because of all that he lost balance and pulled the wheel left.
!#WRONG WAY#!
The ambulance turned left and then Detective Cat saw it: a sign that said "ABH, American Border Hospital, Since 1990." Detective Cat hit the brakes, but they did not respond. Then he opened the door and threw himself out. He got up and headed for the hospital.
One receptionist came and Detective Cat asked, "My friend is Corpuslin..." Before he could finish, the receptionist said "OR 567." Detective Cat threw the receptionist a surprised look and then walked to OR 567...
"There it is," Detective Cat said. And he rushed to section 25. But when he got there, the door was locked. At the top, there was a sign saying: "The patient has been transported to Russia due to medical reasons. As such, Russia will give the best treatment for this patient."
The answer became clear to Detective Cat: he had to travel to Russia and take serious care of his friend. He took a taxi to his house, which was very far from the hospital. It was a two-hour drive, during which Detective Cat fell asleep. He gathered his belongings and his passport. He packed them up in his suitcase and left for the airport...
Bad Luck
Detective Cat was having a wonderful time when suddenly the loudspeaker in his [onboard] hotel room gave the message: "This is Jane O'Hara, pilot of this plane. We are having a hard time configuring the LTAZL. In full state, this is called Landing Target Area Zone Laser. Without this configuration, I am afraid we won't be able to land."
That's when Detective Cat rushed out of his room and made his way to the cockpit with his CMBR (Computer Memory Blackout Repair). There were two human pilots and a human flight attendant.
"Where is the power?" asked Detective Cat.
"Have you got a CMBR?" asked the flight attendant. "Where is it?!" asked Detective Cat.
"There," replied Jane O'Hara in a childish tone. "Whatcha gonna do?" she asked. "Kick it," said Detective Cat in a Westernized tone. He plugged everything in and waited...
Landed!
"Well, that was a close shave," said the pilot as she hit the runway. Then, suddenly, one of the engines to the right exploded, forcing the plane to slide and slam the left wing into the control tower. Emergency crews rushed to the control tower to retieve human bodies; three were found among them who escaped with minor injuries. Then the crews rushed to the airplane but were relieved to find people climbing out.
To Detective Cat's annoyance, three security guards guarding the tower escorted him to the terminal. But before Detective Cat could enter, the guards pulled him outside suddenly as an astonishing beam of light broke from somewhere, killing both security guards as they saved Detective Cat. Then the air was filled with the sound of AK-45000s firing at an unseen object.
Then it happened. Detective Cat felt a surge of fear at the end of his spine and as he turned his head, he saw a figure he'd seen before, and it was Electric Dog... not in the form he had seen before. He was a skeleton.
"Say hello to your rival."
Electric Dog looked at Detective Cat and smiled wickedly. They looked at each other for something that felt like hours. Electric Dog laughed, threw a body on the floor and said "Till we meet again. Say hello to your rival" before disappearing into a thick blue gas.
Detective Cat knew who the body was, and "The Sadness of the Heart" sang in his head, and he knew his friend was no longer.
The strength to fight back?
Now Detective Cat knew what Electric Dog wanted: a face-to-face talk. He took a deep breath and thundered, "Come out now............!!!!!!"
Then he saw that everything was changing. The sky turned a dull black, the sorrowful horizon was replaced with a scene too horrifying to see, a horizon filled with humongous... RATS! Cat-thirsty rats! And then they moved off, for the room was filled with a dull blue, then brighter, then more, until Detective Cat could not see. He saw the source of the light, and he made out the figure of Electric Dog!
"In the flesh," he smiled, then Detective Cat lost control of himself. He was lion-hearted, but against his rival he felt weakness pounding on his back. Then he let out a scream, a terrified one. He pulled out his gun, but some invisble force pulled it back. His best gun was in acid now.
Electric Dog slowly but calmly said "You won't be needing that." Then he continued in a soft voice: "Do you know... I suppose you don't. I killed your friend Corpuslingy because he lied at court about me, and your mother..." Detective Cat whimpered at the thought of how his mother was killed. Electric Dog said, "Now please don't interrupt, that's a good fellow. I killed her because I had to for your own good, my son, everyone in your life except your mother claimed false testimony on me, your father."
THE END OF DAYS
"Why?" asked Detective Cat.
Electric Dog replied, "They would be after you if she was alive, that is all." Then Detective Cat remembered and said, "Father, sorry, sorry..." Then Detective Cat started fading with his father and they were in heaven.
