A gilded statue of the goddess Kuanyin inside of a temple on Wuchang Street in the Old Town district.

A couple of nights later, Abby and I watched a public television show about two Taiwanese dance instructors (a mother and son). The show included a performance of a traditional scarf dance at this very same location.

Offerings of incense and prayers at the same temple as above on December 31, which was the New Moon day.

Fading light by the lotus pond at the Botanical Garden.

Stainless steel heart

I had walked by the Zhongshan National Hall, a performing arts center, before visiting the temple. I'd been to the nationl police bureau a few minutes earlier, and when I walked into the plaza I swore that I heard some Middle Eastern music playing. And this was why.

ChongQing South Road, a wide, busy avenue that connects the main rapid-transit station to the commerce and banking district. There's a fine art and design bookstore called Artland Book along ChongQing, south of Civic Boulevard.

A hair salon sign, I think.

Ah, the incense shop. This is at Nanmen Market, outside of the Chiang Kai-Shek MRT station.

Asia's got it right. The Toyota Previa (and other models using the same basic design) are still available across the continent, whereas the line stopped being sold in North America in '95 or '96. I took possession of my father's Previa in 1998 and I developed a special admiration for this vehicle.

The roots of another tree down the street from the one above, after years of growing through a layer of concrete. And yes, the image is meant to be sideways.

Why did the owl cross the road?

A dog in pants and a vest, wandering around Ximending. I've got another shot of a chihuahua in a bee costume, but that'll come later.

Taipei basil (a mix of blue and violet I'd never seen before)

Midday winter sun (felt like late spring; warm, humid and bright). Actually, with the passing of the solstice and the Lunar New Year imminent (1.29), it's considered the beginning of spring in East Asia.

A tree blossom that I can't quite name, though it seems like I ought to know it. This and the most of the other horticultural photos came from the Botanical Garden.

What seemed to be wee little strawberries underneath the yucca shown above.

Taipei, city of scooters. Note second child standing on running board. It's like that...

Ximending, "Little Shibuya." Notice Ang Lee's smiling face on the mini-Jumbotron (Brokeback Mountain opened here on 1.20; Lee is from Taiwan).

I've already said my piece on this matter.

Bling, 20% off!

I traveled 2/3 of the way around the planet and found myself staring at a 10-story-tall image of Martin Lawrence in grotesque drag. How did this happen?
