Isis Majik is a series of composite photographs that first went on display in the summer of 2003. The images are combinations of studio photographs, landscapes, botanical images, and astrophotographs.

I had simply wanted to layer fractals and nudes when I began to work with models in the autumn of 2002. I had not done any nude photography work before this time, although I had developed ideas for two different series in which that type of imagery would come into play. Those are series that I still want to complete.

I eventually let go of the idea of using fractals because the potential with blended photographs was more interesting. I reviewed work that integrated aspects of transpersonal psychology and archetypal symbols, as well as that which depicted historical or imagined female deities.

I conducted a few sessions and refined the content during the winter and spring of 2003. April 14 was a creative turning point. Following the suggestion of the woman in Perseid Dream*1, I used a time-lapsed landscape from Sedona AZ and a Hubble photo of the Eagle Nebula*2 to enhance the studio image. The textures and dimensions produced, to my mind, an ineffable yet familiar view from dreams -- a space in which I wished I could be (and in which I felt I had already been). I discovered the general aesthetic that would permeate the images that were to follow.

As the seasons progressed and the days lengthened, ideas and manifestation increased. I arranged more sessions and made plans for an informal show. I began to work on a title, hoping to create something like the anagram in nmazca. After too much effort and a lot of scribbling on the bus, I arrived at Isis Majik, an anagram derived from the fourth letter in the name of each woman with whom I planned to work. I had wanted to show 16 images, but I changed the total to 11 shortly before the opening.*3

The series went on display at Espresso Roma in Seattle, from July 11 until August 29 2003. Isis Majik was also shown at Sean Christopher Gallery in Columbus OH from February 7-29 2004. Images can be purchased through this site. Click on any image above for pricing information. Please email me if you have additional questions.

Thank you for taking the time to view and read about this work. I hope that it satisfies your interest and provides inspiration. My gratitude goes to each of the women with whom I worked during the last year... and to my friends and family who provided encouragement and support.

*1 - I had an image of Jamie in front of a white background, lunging with a branch, and I emailed her the question "What do you think I should with this?" Her reply: "I see night and dreams."

*2 - The backgrounds in images #2, 7 and 13 were "sampled" from either the main Hubble Space Telescope site or the Hubble Heritage archive. The infrared image in image #12 came from the Two Micron All-Sky Survey of our galaxy undertaken by researchers at the University of Massachusetts and Caltech. All other imagery came from my own negatives and slides.

*3 - "But I count 13." Indeed. Chroma and Cloud are two personal favorites that were made during the preparation for the first show. Chroma and Sublimity replaced other images when I decided to switch things around in August.
